World Photography Day is celebrated every August 19th. The date commemorates the day in 1839 when the French government purchased and released the patent for the daguerreotype, the first device capable of permanently fixing an image with light. Origin of the date: On August 19, 1839, Louis Daguerre presented his invention to the French Academy of Sciences. The French State declared the process a free gift for everyone. The global initiative to celebrate this specific day began in 2009 thanks to photographer Korske Ara. Importance of the day: It pays tribute to the art, science, and history behind the lens. It recognizes the value of freezing moments and building humanity's memory. Celebrating this day and its significance in Second Life, we pay tribute to the people who contribute, design, create, program, and invent within Second Life, making the process of taking photographs in this metaverse a reality.
